Op Valentine's dag, ben ik naar Amsterdam gegaan om het VOC schip de "Amsterdam" te bezichtigen. Het schip ligt nu tijdelijk bij NEMO, het groen koperen gebouw in de vorm van een schip. De replica van het VOC schip de "Amsterdam" ligt daar tijdelijk vanwege een enorme en langdurige verbouwing aan het Scheepvaartmuseum. NEMO ligt aan de Amstel, niet ver van het Centraal Station en is op loopafstand te bereiken, een wandeling van ongeveer 15 minuten.On Valentine's day, I went to Amsterdam to visit the V.O.C.-ship "Amsterdam". The ship lies temporarily in front of NEMO, the copper green building. The replica of the VOC ship "Amsterdam" lies there temporarily because of an enormous renovation at the Maritime Museum. You can find the NEMO building at the border of the river Amstel, not far from the Central Station, a walk of approximately 15 minutes.
Het was weer zo'n donkere, grijze dag en onderweg in de trein keek ik naar buiten en nam mij voor om er toch een leuk uitstapje van te maken."Eigenlijk kun je met zulk weer wel aardige foto's maken", sprak ik mijzelf moed in. Eerder had ik al geleerd dat er in ruim 5 jaar tijd, meer dan 400 vrijwilligers aan de bouw van deze replica hebben gewerkt. Ik wilde de sfeer wel eens proeven en weten hoe het vroeger op deze schepen geweest moet zijn. Dit soort gedachten hielden mij bezig tijdens het uurtje treinreizen.
It was a dark, grey day and in the train I looked through the window and decided to make the best of it, a really amusing and nice outing.
"Actually, you can make nice photos under these weather circumstances." I spoke to myself to encourage myself. Earlier I already learned that it in more than 5 years, about 400 volunteers worked at the construction of this replica. I wanted to feel and to know how the atmosphere was on board of these ships in the Golden Ages. This kind of thoughts kept me busy during the one hour journey by train.
Gebruikmakend van de typische loopbrug kom je bij NEMO en de replica van de "Amsterdam" en direct valt het enorme boegbeeld met de leeuwenkop op.Walking over the typical bridge I approached NEMO and the replica of the "Amsterdam" and immediately my attention went out to the enormous figurehead with the lions head.
De achterkant van het schip is eigenlijk nog mooier. De aanblik van het schip deed mij terugdenken aan een aantal jongensboeken die ik vroeger heb gelezen. De wereldreizen die met deze schepen werden gemaakt waren bikkelharde ondernemingen en veel minder romatisch als dat ze tegenwoordig worden voorgesteld.Actually, the backside of the ship is yet more beautiful. When I saw this ship she made me think back at a number of books that I read in my youth. Travelling with these ships around the world over the oceans were though enterprises and less romantic than we think nowadays.
Bij het betreden van het schip werden de mensen ontvangen door de kapitein en een paar bemanningsleden. Er werd gelegenheid geboden om vragen te stellen en voor de bezoekende kinderen werd tijd gemaakt om met deze historische figuren op de foto te gaan. Sommige kinderen dachten dat ze op een piratenschip waren beland en leefden zich uit in hun fantasiewereldje. De kleinsten luisterden aandachtig naar de uitleg die ze kregen.By entering the ship, people were welcomed by the captain and a few crew members. For the visiting children there was time offered to ask questions, and there was enough time to make photos together with these historical people. Some children thought that they were on a pirates ship and lived in their own phantasy world. The smallest children listened attentive to the explanations they got.
En terwijl ik dat tafereel van korte afstand gadesloeg, kwamen deze jongetjes op mij toerennen en vroegen heel enthousiast: "Meneer, mogen we op de foto?!" En dat ene ventje, rechts op de foto, was heel kordaat, trok zijn vriendje naar zich toe en sloeg zijn arm om zijn schouder. Deze vriendschap moest ik toen wel vastleggen, wie kan zoiets nu weigeren. Ik liet het resultaat op het scherm van de digitale camera zien en ze waren er dik tevreden over."Komen we nu in de krant, meneer?".
"Ja, zoiets.", zei ik, en voordat ik gelegenheid kreeg om ze een adreskaartje mee te geven waren ze alweer vertrokken, op weg naar een volgende belevenis. Waarschijnlijk zien ze hun foto niet meer terug en dat vind ik toch wel jammer.
And meanwhile I observed that scene from a short distance, these young boys ran to me and asked quite enthusiastic: "Sir, do you make a photo of us?!" The little guy on the right side was quite firm, he grabbed his friend at his jacket and put his arm around the shoulder of his friend. I had to shoot a photo of this friendship, how could I refuse their wish. I wanted them to see the result on the screen of the digital camera and they were enthusiastic and satisfied with the result.
"Will the photo be published in the newspaper, Sir?". they asked.
"Yes, something like that.", I promised, and before I could give them my address card they were gone, on their way to the next experience. Probable they never see their photograph and I surely regret that.
Aan boord zie je zoveel interessante dingen, voorwerpen waarover je hebt gelezen of die je herkent uit films. Er is zoveel te vertellen en te laten zien, ik kies er maar een paar uit om een idee te geven hoe er in het want werd geklommen om de zeilen bij te zetten, waar de roerganger stond en welk uitzicht de kapitein had vanuit zijn verblijf. Misschien wel aardig om op te merken wat stuurboord-, en wat bakboordzijde is. Hier eenvoudig te herkennen aan de kleur van de trappen, groen is stuurboord (rechterkant van het schip), rood is bakboord (linkerkant van het schip). Op de foto kijk je dus naar de achterkant van het schip.On board you see so much interesting things, about objects of which you have read or that you recognize from films. There is so much to tell and to show, I made a choice of a few things. To give an idea how it was to send men aloft to set the sails, where the helmsman stood and which view the captain had from its cabin. Perhaps nicely to notice what starboard, and what port side is on the ship. It is simple to recognize where you are at the color of the stairs, green is starboard (right-hand side of the ship), red is port side (left side of the ship). De ruimen rijk gevuld met kostbare lading, voornamelijk kruiden, specerijen, koffie en thee maar ook allerlei andere handelswaar werd in Amsterdam aangevoerd uit Nederlands Oost-Indië.The cargo spaces richly filled with precious cargo, mainly spices such as pepper, nutmeg, cacao, coffee and tea but also other trade ware were shipped from Dutch East Indië to Amsterdam.
Het was een riskante onderneming die handelsvaart op het verre Oosten, en om zichzelf onderweg te beschermen waren de schepen rijkelijk voorzien van kanonnen en ander schiettuig. Achter elk schietgat bevond zich een zwaar kanon waarmee aanvallers moesten worden geweerd.Trading in the far East was very risky, and to protect themselves there were guns and other weapons on board. Behind each shoot hole, a heavy gun was found to keep attackers away.
Even waande ik mij, net als deze kinderen, in een tijd die al lang vervlogen is. Het was een leuke, spannende ochtend en ik besloot om het schip te verlaten. Nog even een ommetje maken door Oud Amsterdam, via de Gelderse Kade naar de Nieuwmarkt dan over de Zeedijk en weer richting Centraal Station waar ik de trein nam naar... huis.Geniet de rest van deze zonnige zondag.
I imagined, just like these children, I lived for a while in the past. It was an amusing and exciting morning and I decided to leave the ship "Amsterdam" just to make a walk through a part of Old Amsterdam, via the Gelderse Kade (Wharf) to the Nieuwmarkt (New Market) and the Zeedijk (Seawall) direction Central Station where I took the train... home.
