Spoorwegmuseum in Utrecht (1)

Christmas is over, but right after Christmas we have always another happening, the 27th is our daughter's birthday and we went by train to Utrecht to celebrate this. There we should meet each other in the railroad museum, a nice place to stay especially for our grandchildren where they could amuse themselves.

The trip from Schagen to Utrecht lasted almost 2 hours, but the last route from the Central Station in Utrecht to the museum at Maliebaan Station must be done by an old train, and that lasted very long.

To break waiting time on the station, railroad personnel offered in the meantime candy for the waiting children. Then the train arrived at the station and everybody hopped in and took a seat, the old train found its way, with many delays, to the Maliebaan Station.

When we arrived at the Maliebaan Station we were totally surprised to see so many people who wanted a ticket for this museum. The crowd who travelled with the old train formed a long row, but moreover many visitors arrived by car. That resulted in long rows of waiting people and we stood at least a quarter of an hour outside in the cold. O yes, sometimes one has to endure something to celebrate daughter's birthday and also to see the grandchildren.

At last, we came from the cold air outside in the beautiful and heated station hall. Firstly, we had to buy a ticket before we definitively could enter the large hall. An enormous Christmas tree, with Christmas bells as big as a football, stood in the middle of the hall. Also in other spaces and rooms were beautiful decorated Christmas trees. And from outside, the public formed an endless row and remained coming in.

Gradually I notice that I need more time and space to tell my story, therefor I interrupt here and I invite you into the waiting room just for a while until I'm back for the second part. Ultimately I also must try to translate this.

Kortste dag 2007

Yesterday it was the shortest day of the year. From today the day times lengthen again. The first weeks it is scarcely noticeable that time differs a few minutes per day. A month from now we will notice it very well, because each day a few minutes more, makes almost two hour daylight during a whole day. Yesterday, on that shortest day of the year, it was beautiful, a little bit foggy, it froze a few degrees, and there was no wind. The effect is that there arises white frost. Trees and plants become at once quite different, the white ice layer on branches, leaves and plants create a mysterious world. Distances blur in the mist and everything appears quite nearby through which all kinds of details become suddenly visible.

It was not necessary to go far from home to notice this beauty, I took my camera, walked from home and stood right in the middle of that wonderful white world, and not one snowflake had fallen. The camera-tripod became icily cold in my hands and I put it on the ground to warm my hands. You know how to do this, swing your arms and slap your hands robust on your back, long enough until there flows some blood through the fingers. I walked around our house to the backside where on short distance a ditch and a small pond is. The trees were really beautiful, each branch had a thin ice layer. It was wonderful.

In many countries, and also more and more in our own small country, Christmas is nowadays celebrated as an occasion of overloading each other with expensive gifts and much food and drinks. The meaning of Christmas disappeared and has been replaced by..... Yes, by what actually?

That was only yesterday, this morning I went out, the sun was shining and I saw a splendid clearly blue sky through the window. I saw on the computer the temperature was -1° C, therefore the white world must still be there. I Took rapidly my camera and walked around the house to the backside. And what I saw was still more beautiful than yesterday, this time all the white beauty in the sunlight and the impact was absolutely different than the day before.

We see these pictures here not frequently because the climate has changed drastically. So I have used the occasion to photograph it. A couple hours after I had made these photos, the temperature rose to1° or 2° C and the result was that the white sight gradually disappeared. Inconceivable how rapidly that can go. The weather forecast for Christmas is rain, but then I still think to my photos and imagine that we have had a White Christmas this year.

Gelukkig Kerstfeest

Merry Christmas

Back on-line

I am back after a long pause. From now on I'll try to write regularly again. The computer works fine now for a while, but there was so much to do to put everything back in its place, so there was not much time left to write in my blog. Alright, I am back again and this is a warming up for a new start. I want to thank everybody for the amusing comments and encouragements in the previous post.

After the Saint Nicholas celebration the decorations in all stores were fast replaced by Christmas decorations. In the shopping center in Schagen they are always fast to replace the old ones by new festive decorations, and I like to go there to see what's new this year.

This little girl looked quite attentive into this stall and wondered if this deer was real. Grandmother looked also full interest.

Firstly she looked at the deer from all sides and then she tried to give one piece of her roll, but the animal gave no sign of life and remained standing like a broom. Now then just a caress over its head, that was also good she thought. It is very amusing to see those children how interested they are in all new discoveries.

Also in the shopping center in Den Helder was some decoration, but that could not tip at what I saw in Schagen.

Because I have not been writing lately, this is an old story and remained actually on the shelf here. I want to tell more the next time.

For now I'm glad that everything works again.

It happened again!

For the second time my brandnew PC crashed, and it happened within 6 months. I have to use my old computer now and that means, temporarily no photographs and no other complicated things. Thus till I have my repaired PC back I can only do some simple things. This time a video of Loreena McKennith.

Sinterklaas weer terug naar Spanje

Click on the first figure

I have to explain a few things for a couple of Blogfriends.

Sinterklaas

The saint Nicholas celebration is in the first place a party for children. Everything around the saint Nicholas celebration has been directed around the little ones and it is an exciting celebration for them by which many presents and candy are distributed. The children believe saintly that they can ask for everything from that generous saint Nicholas and that all their wishes will be fulfilled.

A few weeks before the real saint Nicholas celebration, the children are allowed set their shoe, then the Chaps come in at night and put some candy in it. Often the children put a carrot in their shoe for the horse Americo and some offer also a bucket water for the horse, then they will certainly not be forgotten by the Saint. Previously, when people wear wooden shoes then the children used their wooden shoes, but nobody wears them anymore, only farmers do.

A few weeks later it is there, 5 December, many Dutch families sit together that evening in front of the stove (nowadays, near the central heating probably). They sing songs, unpack their presents and eat a lot of candy.

The saint Nicholas celebration is very old (and so is the Saint). Not everybody has good knowledge of the good Saint. Do you know for instance that saint Nicholas actually did not come from Spain but from Turkey? And that Saint Nicholas and Santa Claus actually are the same person?

Sint Nicolaas and Santa Claus are the same figures.
A Turk, Nicolaas, as the Saint was named previously, was born in Patara quite long ago. To be precise in the year 280 after Christ. Patara is a place in Turkey. Actually the Saint is a Turk and no Spaniard! Later on Nicolaas became bishop of the place Myra. After his death men found that he had done so much good things in his life and Nicolaas was saintly declared by the Catholic Church. Since then he is called Saint (=Holy) Nicolaas.

Saint Nicolaas and Santa Claus are the same person.

Santa Claus

Centuries ago many Dutchmen moved to America. They took also the saint Nicholas celebration with them. Only this celebration changed in the course of years... . Saint Nicholas became Santa Claus. The Saint's clothes and outfit changed and also the date on which presents were given became moved. After time, this happened no longer on December 5, but with Christmas. This way arised a quite new figure. Santa Claus as he looks today is a creation of the Coca Cola Company. In the last 30 - 40 years, Christmas is more and more celebrated in The Netherlands the same way as in many other countries, with Santa Claus and again presents. Oddly enough saint Nicholas in the Netherlands must compete with... himself.

Christmas is in my opinion the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ and when I then think back in time, where I was a child, and thinking of how Christmas previously was celebrated, then I have complete different memories of what I see now. I remember the Midnight Mass in the Church, a Christmas crib, Christmas carols, beautiful music, snow and the Christmas story. And it's just a little bit difficult for me to find the relation with a cute Coca Cola guy. Alright, Saint Nicholas went back to Spain again, has put Americo in the stable. He changed his clothes and his name to Santa Claus, then he traveled off now to Rovanimi nearby Finland. There the toys factory has been started to make more toys and more beautiful presents. Rudolf and the other reindeers came back home and the feast starts over again. This time not Saint Nicholas presents, only Christmas presents from Santa Claus. Ho ho ho....

Have a nice weekend!
